On The Road Creations was the name created in a discussion amongst several friends at an RV park outside Kelso, WA almost 10 years ago. Today, it has grown into a business that literally creates personalized children's music CD's and appliquéd jackets while traveling, in a motor home.
After purchasing a sweatshirt jacket from a vendor at a craft show, and giving it as a gift, the jacket was the wrong size and needed to be exchanged. The seamstress was invited to bring her album of jacket designs so a larger jacket, with a different design, could be ordered. During the conversation over coffee a statement was made about how fun it would be to own a business like hers and do various shows at which the public would buy the finished goods. The ball started rolling and within 90 days the vendor had sold her business to me, lock, stock and barrel…literally.
At that time I was working a full-time job, but began duplicating exact copies of the purchased inventory and entered several of the local craft shows where sales were good, but there was no diversification of product, just repetition of what the original owner had designed. Encouragement from friends finally pushed me, in baby steps, to begin to expand my creative ideas and design my own creations. A world of possibilities opened and today there is not a duplication of product any where in the inventory. Each jacket is created for the individual, and though the theme may be the same, no two jackets are alike. The challenge is the stimulation that guarantees your jacket to be one-of-a-kind, no matter your choice of colors or design style.
As an example, perhaps the most challenging creation was done for a lady on the Oregon coast who wanted a "bold" colored jacket with some type of design that included a giraffe, or giraffes. Through some searching for fabric and brain-storming ideas with friends, you will see the finished product as you scroll through some of the examples shown below. It was absolutely a fun jacket to make and I appreciated her confidence in my ability to give her a unique garment that she would not find in any retail outlet.
Another exciting jacket was created for a woman that really didn't have a lot of guidelines, just something "southwesty". That leeway allowed me to appliqué a desert sunset silhouette shaped in the outline of a mountain, along with some stars and an ocotillo cactus on the pocket. People are still talking about that one! Now the business has expanded to the world-wide-web. Talk about "traveling!" Yuma, AZ was the location of the first holiday craft show we participated in after retiring from my full time job and "hitting the road." What an eye-opener, in oh so many ways, but the best experience came from the vendor next to us. He had a children's music CD business and was doing very well, selling to the winter visitors for the grandchildren back home. After the first 10 hour day we were humming the catchy little tunes for the rest of the night, laughing at how even adults enjoyed songs that make people smile. By the end of the third day, we owned the business! Personalized children's CD's were now a part of On The Road Creations.
In the beginning our customers only had one choice: You Are My Friend. Though that was the CD we had heard repetitively for 3 days, we soon realized there were other choices to present to the buying public, so the ordering frenzy began and we now have 12 subject themes to choose from, with songs for the newborn through 12 years of age.
